Godspouse FAQs

I get a lot of questions on Loki and on godspousery and spiritwork. This is a list of the commonly asked questions that I get as a spiritworker/godspouse. It’s by no means extensive and I will probably add to it as necessary.
Q. What’s a godspouse?
A. A godspouse is a mortal consort of a deity.
Q. Why would a deity want a mortal consort?
A. For love, of course. The Gods need and want our love, and They give it to us in the form in which we need it. For some, that love comes as a paternal or maternal connection, and for others, it comes in the form of Divine marriage. There are numerous examples of spousery in the Lore and in other religions – Eros and Psyche, for example, or Freyr’s mortal wife in theÖgmundar þáttr dytts.
Q. Help! I think I might be in a Divine courtship, how do I know for sure?
A. Divination is in order if you’re not certain. If you feel you need a reading, you may contact me at lokisbruid AT gmail DOT com, and we can discuss payment. What I charge varies much and depends on circumstances – Loki tells me whether He wants money, artwork, barter of services, etc.
Q. How do you know that you’re not just hearing things?
A. Both Dver and Lagutyr have written excellent posts on distinguishing Divine communication from internal chatter. And I would always advise divination if you’re not sure that you’re getting a clear signal.
Q. I know I’m a godspouse/consort/spiritworker, but I don’t know where to start! Who do I talk to about this stuff?
A. The first thing you should always do is talk to your God/dess. Your connection to Him or Her is of primary importance. Fulfill your obligations to the Divine, whether it’s time, dress, diet, meditation, topics of study, etc.
Secondly, if you want to connect with other spiritworkers, Darkamber has started a support forum where people can connect, compare notes, discuss our Gods, and exchange helpful information.
Q. What are the nuts and bolts of being a spiritworker?
A. This varies depending on who the spiritworker’s God/dess is, and what the person’s talents are. For example, my workday involves a lot of familial obligations, and in between those, I have to meditate regularly, answer emails, do readings, prepare rituals, and study lore and astral work. I also have a heavy teaching component in my work for Loki, so I have to prepare lessons on Him, on rune work, meditation, and spousery. Some of this work is online, and some of it is for my local Pagan group.
Q. Doesn’t being married to a God imply, um, marital relations?
A. Yep. Loki’s not a prude and neither am I. I haven’t written about sexuality thus far, but it may come up in lessons on altered states/trancework.
If you’ve got a question that I haven’t answered here, or one that you would like added to the FAQ, please contact me at lokisbruid AT gmail DOT com.
